Finding Peace and Belonging With Ardelle and Ernie Quantz at Serenity Farm

October 24, 2017

This story is even closer to my heart than others I have shared as it involves my sweet parents and the story of a community farming project. This story is about them, the project they have helped initiate but also indirectly tells so much about me and the path I am on with my work and my passions. These two are responsible for fostering for my love of plants, gardening, food, cooking and of course eating and sharing food with others. Family dinners were foundational in our house. I especially looked forward to Sunday dinners. They were the types of meals you would smell cooking a good part of the day and often involved some of our family’s favourite recipes and there was always dessert. My grandpa would join us every Sunday and sometimes our elderly Austrian neighbour, Joe or other family friends.

We always had a garden growing up and both sides of the family were well rooted in farming communities. I feel so grateful to have grown up in such a loving and caring environment and exposed to good food and taught to cook from a very early age. I was raised to have a deep appreciation for nature and eating with the seasons and from as close to home as possible. I am keenly aware, however, that so many do not have such a supportive and nourishing start to their lives and do not receive the love and support they need to thrive. It is my intention with the telling of these stories around food and healing to not only look at how we can use food to heal our physical bodies but how the act of growing food and caring for plants can be deeply healing on an mental and emotional level.

The Dahlia Patch with River and Sea Flowers

October 20, 2016

During the quiet moments of these dull and rainy days of fall, I find my mind wandering back to this photo shoot I did at the very end of summer with my friend and talented flower farmer Rachel of River and Sea Flowers.

I had a vision the previous summer when I was out at Cropthorne Farm of doing a shoot with Rachel in her growing flower patch. At the time, she was mainly growing vegetables with her sister Lydia and trying out the flower thing on the side. This flower patch has now blossomed into a small farm and has become her full time business.

This vision of mine included ‘magic hour’ light, saturated colours characteristic of late summer, dreamy back lit flowers and maybe even her sweet girls frolicking through the dahlias wearing flower crowns. Fast forward to a year later. We finally set a date and I was excited about the shoot. The reality upon arriving at the farm was dark skies, no sunshine to be seen and the rain started within a few minutes of having my camera out. We did some shots in the greenhouse and found a few drier spots under the trees which were beautiful and moody but in my heart I still wanted to capture those images that had been floating around in my head for over a year.

Coconut Lime & Cilantro Paletas

June 7, 2016

This recipe is bound to create some controversy. Cilantro is one of those herbs that has two very distinct camps: the lovers and the haters. When my husband told his colleagues that we were making coconut lime and cilantro popsicles, their response was: “why would you do that?” They are clearly in the haters camp. Well this recipe is for the lovers, and I know there are many of them out there, including my sweet friend Desiree who inspired and helped develop this recipe.

I have been shooting photos for my talented and very hard working friend Desiree’s blog. When she first asked if I would take on the photography for the recipes, of course I wanted to help. In the back of my mind I also knew that this was a way for me to ensure some much needed time with this very busy, food loving friend of mine. Our days together are days filled with cooking, shooting, chatting and eating. This last time we decided it would be fun to develop a recipe together that we would both share on our websites. This is the first of what we hope will be a series of collaborations….
