Summer Market Finds
There is hope that summer is finally on the way with the arrival of strawberries and sugar snap peas. I wanted to share a few photos of my favourite finds at the farmers’ market this weekend. These photos are all that is left of the strawberries and peas but there are plenty of other vegetables left to be cooked up this week. I plan on making a pasta dish with garlic scapes, Swiss chard, caramelized onions, olives, feta cheese and perhaps a few pine nuts and also a salade nicoise with farm fresh eggs of course. I love this time of year as each week there are new and exciting vegetables and fruits that come into season, giving me the chance to revisit favourite recipes and explore news ones as well.
Here are some of the beauties we will be feasting on this week. A rainbow of chard and radishes.
The sweetest sugar snap peas and cute little purple kohlrabi, perfect additions to any salad or platter of veggies.
And the lovely and pungent garlic scapes. If you aren’t familiar with garlic scapes, they are the flower stalks of the garlic plant. The stem and the flower are both edible and delicious. They are somewhat milder than garlic but still pack quite a garlicky punch. I prefer to saute them and love them with eggs, potatoes, in stir fries or even made into a pesto. The scapes are around from about mid-June to mid-July and are well worth experimenting with before the new season of garlic arrives later in the summer.
Happy cooking and happy summer!
